Small beam nonparaxiality arrests self-focusing of optical beams.

چکیده
A new equation for self-focusing in the presence of small beam nonparaxiality is derived. Analysis of this equation shows that nonparaxiality remains small as the beam propagates. Nevertheless, nonparaxiality arrests self-focusing when the beam width becomes comparable to its wavelength. A series of focusing-defocusing cycles of decreasing magnitude follows, ending with a final defocusing stage. [S0031-9007(96)00384-5]

Self-focusing of elliptic beams: an example of the failure of the aberrationless approximation
We show that the increase in critical power for elliptic input beams is only 40% of what had been previously estimated based on the aberrationless approximation. We also find a theoretical upper bound for the critical power, above which elliptic beams always collapse. If the power of an elliptic beam is above critical, the beam self-focuses and undergoes partial beam blowup, during which the co...
متن کاملSelf-focusing of circularly polarized beams.
We present a systematic study of propagation of circularly polarized beams in a Kerr medium. In contrast to previous studies, vectorial effects (i.e., coupling to the axial component of the electric field and the grad-div term) and nonparaxiality are not neglected in the derivation. This leads to a system of equations that takes into account nonparaxiality, vectorial effects, and coupling to th...
متن کاملVectorial and random effects in self-focusing and in multiple filamentation
The standard explanation for multiple filamentation of laser beams is that breakup of cylindrical symmetry is initiated by noise in the input beam. In this study we propose an alternative deterministic explanation based on vectorial effects. We derive a scalar equation from the vector Helmholtz equation that describes self-focusing in the presence of vectorial and nonparaxial effects. Numerical...
متن کاملSingle gradientless light beam drags particles as tractor beams.
Usually a light beam pushes a particle when the photons act upon it. We investigate the optical forces by nonparaxial gradientless beams and find that the forces can drag suitable particles all the way towards the light source. The major criterion of realizing the backward dragging force is the strong nonparaxiality of the light beam, which contributes to the pulling force owing to momentum con...
متن کاملSmall-Scale Self-Focusing Effects in Tapered Optical Beams
This memo presents a simple analysis of small-scale self focusing or filamentation effects in strongly diverging or converging optical beams (“tapered beams”) propagating in nonlinear or saturable optical media. In contrast to the collimated beam case where the nonlinear perturbations can be modelled as uniformly spaced periodic ripples, the nonlinear phase and amplitude ripples in the tapered-...
